It doesn’t take a celebrity designer to create one hell of a home makeover. Neither do you have to have new fixtures, particularly new furniture, which can rake up your debt to sickening amounts. Really, all you will really have to have is a flash of resolve, a wish for true modification, and most importantly, extensive reorganization in your furniture format.

Absolutely, you heard it right. How you arrange your furniture and basically all other fixtures in your home speaks a great deal about how fashionable it is. How you group various items in a room can considerably determine how good or bad it truly is. These are a few of the things you should focus on to help you transform your house without spending too much and while increasing the full use of everything you can do with the furniture layout plan.

Focal points. Each area should exhibit a focal point - an item or an area that should capture your concentration the most and that sets the climate for the complete room. The most significant error people make is making their the focal point of their family rooms. Undoubtedly you have visited households where all the furniture are set in front of the television and it is just dreadful. The main point of interest in a space should be picked not merely due to its tastefulness but also for the function it provides in the room. If you have your television as the main interest in your living room’s floor plan then you’re diverting friends who would be coming into it from conversing and encouraging to only watch the television. Be wise in choosing your focal points - emphasize the S seeing that you can really have more that one in a room.

Balance. Good arrangement is great proportion. Is the furniture evenly placed? Does it appear to be heavy next to the window and too sparse next to the fire place? Does it feel like one zone feels too heavy and uncomfortable to be in as opposed to the other? Balance helps relax the look of any room and it encourages home owners to reach out and use all the space they have available.

Space. While furniture layouts mainly focus on the furniture pieces themselves, it would be really great if you would also consider the space - meaning, the space between each fixture. Space allows the room to “breathe.” Lack of it leads rooms to look too small and too much of it leads it to appear cold and stiff. Ample spacing is also meaningful so each piece of furniture in the room can stand out and be admired more.

Furniture placement schemes are only, of course, a part of an entire area’s design. Yet, given that you only need to cut costs while implementing large upgrades in your space, they naturally supply a perfect point for you to begin.

Soy Candles that are American Made

Posted by Nancy Rivers
by Nancy Rivers

Each night the national news is reporting on the various economic disasters that are occurring in the American economy. Fortunately, there is an incredibly easy way for us Americans to support our own economy and our own friends and neighbors. Soy candles are produced by companies based in the United States and sold by companies based in the United States. This makes the process of buying American made candles extremely easy!

Soy candles are made from the soybean plant - which is grown by the American farmer. Once the soybean is harvested in September, the beans are crushed separating the meat from the oil. The meat of the soybean is often referred to as soy meal and is further processed into various products for both animal and human food. The oil then goes through a partial hydrogenation process which transforms the oil into a soft wax. This wax is what candles are made of. It has been estimated that it would take 60 million pounds of soybeans each year to meet the demands of the annual consumption of candles.

Pure soy wax is extremely soft so it will not produce quality freestanding candles such as pillar candles or taper candles. In order to produce such candles, soy wax must be blended with an additive that will produce a firmer candle. The additive is almost always some other wax. Paraffin wax is very commonly blended with soy wax because it is relatively inexpensive. Vegetable waxes such as castor, palm, rice, jojoba and candelilla, can also be blended with soy producing an all natural candle made from renewable resources.

Soy candles are incredibly popular because of the many health benefits. Since soy candles are all natural, they are non-toxic and burn at cooler temperatures, so are safe for both humans and pets. Due to the cooler burning temperatures, soy candles will typically burn from 20 to 30% longer than paraffin wax candles. Additionally, soy candles while not soot-free, will produce approximately 90 to 95% less soot than the paraffin wax candle. The soot, when produced is mostly white in color - and almost imperceptible by the naked eye. Occasionally, black soot is produced by soy candles, however, it is in very small amounts and is usually due to the presence of an additive such as another wax like paraffin wax. Substances such as fragrance and dyes could also potentially cause the black soot to be produced from soy candles.

Scented soy candles hold a larger amount of fragrance than paraffin wax candles and can release the scent very easily. In fact, most of the time, a scented soy candle can fill the entire room with fragrance without being lit! Scented soy candles will carry the scent all the way through the candle and release it from the beginning to the end of the candle.

Paraffin wax candles are a petroleum based product - meaning they are made from oil. This increases the American dependence on foreign oil supplies and further erodes the American economy. The all natural soy wax candles do not depend on foreign oil or foreign economies because they originate from the soybean plant, grown by American farmers. Soy candles are not just a healthier alternative for our bodies but also a healthy alternative to the economy of the United States.

However, you will need to make sure that the flooring is clean and stable before you fit the floor if you want the best possible results. Another advantage to the DuPont range is that it comes with a pre-installed foam layer underneath the flooring which makes it a lot more comfortable as well as making it sturdier too.

If you have chosen a wood design laminate then really you should make sure that it runs in line with the windows. However it does really depend upon the size and shape of the room. No matter how large the room, the largest wall should be your starting point and ideally you should move in rows. Once the flooring has been installed, you should ideally give it a clean with a damp cloth or mop. You should never use abrasive cleaners on the floor however as they could potentially ruin it.

Hot News for Your Heating System

Posted by Adam Peters
by Adam Peters

You should make sure your home heating system is working properly, not only for your comfort but also for your safety. Here’s how.

As simple as heating your home seems to be, you’d be surprised at how many complicated parts are involved, all ready to break down at the worst possible time. Let’s talk about the obvious ones first.

If there is no heat coming from your heating vents, make sure the circuit breaker is on and the igniter is working. If you are not getting enough heat, make sure your filters are clean. These can easily be blocked with animal hair, dust and other things that blow around the house. They are so cheap that it does not pay to wash them, just install new ones.

Make sure all vents are open and not blocked up. If the vent is near the ceiling, get on a ladder and check. You will not be able to see anything blocking it from below. For low vents, get on your hands and knees and check.

Once you have established that all vents are open and not blocked, you have to check the duct work. IN most systems, you should be able to see them in the attic on top of the ceiling insulation. Look for any breaks, then turn on the heat and, use a tissue to feel for air leaks. If you have had any mice or rat infestation, there may be damage, since they can easily chew through.

Don’t use duct tape to repair ducts. It does not hold up well in high temperatures and humidity and will cause further leaks. Some local building codes do not even allow duct tape to be used. Instead, use mastic tape which seals better.

If you wrap your ducts with insulation, you may stem some heat loss; be sure to check the building code for which types of material you are allowed to use.

If there is any noise in the heating system, there are a number of possible causes.

If the system is belt driven, the belt may have stretched over time, and with fluctuating temperatures. A loose belt will squeak as it slips on its pulley. These belts are simple and inexpensive to replace.

A rattle will indicate loose screws in the connecting plates or in the duct work. The metal expands and contracts, causing this. You may be able to dent the material so that it fits tighter and does not rattle, and loose screws can be tightened, but be careful not to screw through the insulation or any wires.

Another reason you are not getting enough heat may be because your heating system is not adequate for your home. You should be able to see the rating on a tag on the pump. If this is the case, however, you will have to have the system professionally upgraded.

Another problem is that the duct work is not large enough for the home. This is measured by flow ratings. Ideally, they should be 50 to 60 liters per second per kilowatt hour. It is possible to replace the duct work, but not an easy job. If you have to have a professional address any of your problems, make sure you get a number of estimates. But don’t necessarily go with the cheapest bid. Make sure the contractor is trustworthy and has good references.

One important last note: if you smell gas, report it to the utility company right away. Utility companies also provide service for other heating problems. You can ask them to diagnose your system, and they will be able to judge whether you need to upgrade your system or just have some minor repairs. You can easily extend your cooling and heating four season rooms to keep the sunroom’s temperature comfortable during hot sweltering summer days and chilly winter nights.

Advantages of metal railings

Posted by Adam Peters
by Adam Peters

This article gives us the idea of how iron railings has managed to be one of the favorite materials being used for manufacturing railings and how its durability has played on important role in maintaining its status.

Traditionally, the use of metal in railings and other articles was limited as it required a lot of hard work and skill. With the introduction of technology, working with metal has become easier and made it the most favored material for all class of people.

Iron railings - all time favorites

Traditional and still modern - iron railings The 16th and the 17th century saw the beginning of the industrial revolution, which gave rise to the art of metallurgy. Cast iron and wrought iron railings became famous among the higher class in this era. In those days metallurgy was considered an art, which involved working with metal. The absence of welding technology made it more complicated, as joining metal was done in the traditional way of heating and hammering or by riveting. Basically it involved a lot of skill and hard work, which made it very expensive and affordable only by the rich and elite class.

3 types of iron railings are available a) wrought iron railings b) cast iron railings c) steel railings. Only wrought iron and cast iron railings existed in the 17th century, steel railings have come in vogue in the recent years.

Fashion keeps changing with time, but metal railings will never go out of vogue. Metal does no decompose and hence it is very durable. This one characteristic of iron has helped it survive through ages and changing fashion.

Although, the kings and the aristocratic class preferred other valuable metals like gold, silver in most of the household articles. Iron found considerable use in the construction of railings.

Types of metals used in iron railings Wrought iron railings: railings made of wrought iron are very expensive, as it involves a lot of hard work and skill in fabricating them. It’s a laborious process of pre heating iron and hammering the red hot iron to give them the desired shapes. The scarcity of skilled artisans and hard work involved makes its supply limited and expensive.

Cast iron railings: one can find cast iron railings only in the houses of the very rich and elite. Cast iron railings are made by casting melted iron into sand moulds of desired designs. Although made from iron, it is very fragile and once broken its hard to repair it simply needs replacement.

Mild steel railings: introduced in the 18th century, it gained popularity instantly. Working with mild steel was comparatively easy, as heating was not necessarily required. Riveting could be used to join two pieces, rather then weld them. These qualities of mild steel made it the most preferred metal for railing and other articles.

Use of advanced technology in iron railings With the introduction of technology, metallurgy has become more of science than art. Technology has made bending, cutting and welding metal rods much easier. The invention of the welding technology also made working with iron railings and other articles a much simpler task. Welding has made it possible to experiment with shapes and designs and at the same time reduce its weight and cost which were other wise practically impossible.

With the advancement in the metal working technology, experimenting with shapes and designs has become much easier. Although the metal used is the same, the use of plates and other patterns in making railing has made it more attractive, strong and maintenance free. The use of stainless steel in railing has changed the market of fabrication forever. Deck railingprovide the finishing touches for your new decking and safety is the practical consideration behind the installation of deck railings.

The low maintenance cost, strength and elegance of steel has made it the most preferred material for manufacturing railings and other articles.

New Options in Home Lighting

Posted by Adam Peters
by Adam Peters

How to choose the right lighting for your home. There are many new options for today.

Today’s options in lighting are stupendous, thanks in part to the many new developments in materials and technology. You can have just about any style or design for just about any room in your home.

Choosing among all of these options is usually the hardest part. Here are some ideas to make this easier.

The first thing you should consider before you start shopping for lighting for your home is the electric code in your town, and the limitations of your own electrical system. Older homes, for instance, are lovely to look at, but have older wiring systems that may not be able to support just any lighting system.

For an older electrical system such as this, your best bet may be to contact an electrical contractor to advise you. He will help you calculate usage loads, number of circuit breakers and other technical aspects so you will know what your system can handle, or if you have to upgrade.

Most new systems today consume less electricity. Fluorescent bulbs burn 30% less electricity than standard bulbs, and can now produce a very natural light, unlike the garish lights of the old fluorescent. They also come in many more shapes and sizes besides the standard three foot lengths.

Light Emitting Diode lights have become very popular because of their longevity. They are more expensive initially, but some can last up to 35 years! It is doubtful that you want to keep the same light for 35 years, but you can easily get 7 years out of most LEDs. They use very little electricity-one design, the Enlux, is said to burn 50,000 and use only 22 watts. This means it could burn 24/7 and last 6 years. This is great for porch or landscape lights you may want to keep on a lot for safety.

A new option is a concept called Light Transmitting Concrete. That’s right, concrete. Blocks of LiTraCon are unique idea, with the light emitted by fiber optics that are embedded and give off the light when the block of concrete is back lit.

Luminex fabric uses the same concept, whereby a mesh of optical fibers gives off a soft light from fabrics that can come in many colors. This is a great idea for soft lighting in a bedroom.

Each room has its own special lighting needs. Bathrooms, for example, should be bright and well lit so that shaving, applying makeup and other such tasks are easy. In a bedroom, you would prefer soft lighting and living rooms ideally should have a combination of indirect, soft and bright lights. Keeping the concept of good lighting in mind should make it easier to choose your style.

Outdoor, or “natural” light makes things look the way they do because of temperature. This is measured in Kelvin degrees, a measurement similar to Celsius. For example, a sky in the north, with clear conditions, should measure 7,000 to 8,000K at 12 noon.

This is why bulbs usually cannot imitate natural light; they have lower Kelvin degrees, or “color temperature”. Incandescent bulbs are around 2,800K and even a bright fluorescent is only 4,000K.

One of the modern lighting designs will be able to get closest to natural light, if you are looking for that. Lower “temperature” lighting will produce softer lighting that can even be more subtle when it is recessed. Whether it is a wrought iron lightinghanging in the dining room or a set of scrolled wrought iron sconces in the bedroom, the impact of this lighting is immediate and soothing.

With all of the new options available, you should be able to make your home glow just the way you want.
