How To Install A New Doorbell Yourself

Posted by Greg Hansward
by Greg Hansward

Its embarrassing to say the least, when you have guests who ring a doorbell that doesnt ring. You could easily save yourself this embarrassment, with fixing the doorbell yourself. A doorbell is one of the easiest do-it-yourself electrical projects you might undertake! With just a few easy to do steps, you could re-install the bell as well as salvage your reputation among friends.

New Installation

You can take it from me that this DIY project is for the complete and total non-DIYer too. An easy way of installing a doorbell when your existing one does not work is to buy a wireless model. Thats a foolproof enough plan!

In technical terminology, a wireless doorbell is actually a transmitter. On pushing the doorbell button, a coded signal is sent to the receiver attached to the bell, this makes doorbell chime. Few advantages of the wireless doorbells are:

In case you find it difficult hearing the doorbell (even when its working that is), purchase more than one chime unit and tune all of them to the same button. By doing this, you can place chimes all around the house so that you hear the bell ringing wherever you are even in the basement.

This involves no wires and no more electricity charge than that for a small battery. In the button unit there is a battery. But you can plug most indoor chime units into an electrical outlet, which rules out charging many sets of batteries.

Though replacing a wired doorbell is easy for most DIY-ers, this one is even faster. At the most you need time to decide between the brass and gold finish, otherwise this project is a blink your eye, finish project!

Replacement Installation

For those of you, really pressed for time or not interested in dealing with wires, just change your wired doorbell with one of the wireless models. You could remove your previous doorbell switch with a flat screwdriver; tie up the wires with an electrical tape, while putting them again into the hole of the doorbell. Then the new switch is fixed to the doorframe, ensuring that the hole is covered. In the interiors, plug in the chime unit.

Putting a new wired doorbell in place of an older model should not take you more than a half-hour. What you will need is a new switch and a flat screwdriver. If you want to have things turn out easier or maybe flaunt your superlative toolkit, think of having wire strippers ready.

Those of you, who want to purchase a new chime unit as well, find and change the old chime unit in the same way. Remember which wire goes into which terminal, however, since here they actually have to be connected to the correct terminals on the new chime unit.

Steps To Take in Installing Doors

Posted by Jack Blacksmith
by Jack Blacksmith

Replacing a door is something every homeowner should know how to do. It is a good skill that can be used to help weatherproof a house or just change the look of a room. It is not a difficult process and one that can easily be learned by anyone with basic skills.

Types of Doors

Before actually replacing a door you will need to choose a door. There are three main types of doors - entry, interior and combination. The same general installation is followed for all types of doors. Entry doors are actually the most complex because they need lock installation.

Steps to Replacement

Step One: Remove the old door, being careful not to damage the doorframe. To remove use a wedge to take the weight off the hinges and then simply unscrew them or tap out the pin, depending on the door type.

Step Two: Remove the hinges. You can do this by simply unscrewing them. They can be reused if you are using a similar door as a replacement. They can be buffed or painted.

Step Three: Install new hinges. The screws used to install the hinges should be long enough to go through the frame and stud-wall.

Step Four: Trim the new door, if needed. You can use the old door as a pattern for the correct size or you can take measurements.

Step Five: Prepare the new door. This is done by cutting out the area for the top and bottom hinges. You can use the old door as a pattern or take measurements. It is very important that this be exact or the door will not hang properly. You will use a square and a pencil to mark the hinge locations. Use the hinge to trace onto the door. Then use a chisel to clean up the area and make the notch for the hinge in the wood.

Step Six: Apply wood sealant to the door edges and attach the hinges with wood screws.

Step Seven: Hang the door. Make sure it is even and close the door. Mark where it hits in the middle hinge area. Now ready the door for the middle hinge as you did before with the top and bottom hinges.

Step Eight: Finish hanging the door and install the door knob. No complicated tools No complicated tools or air compressors are needed!

A Tax Deduction for Home Improvement

Posted by Eric Slarkowski
by Eric Slarkowski

In some situations you can take home improvement deductions on your taxes. This is a subject that is quite debatable, though, as standards and regulations are not too clear. What this means for the home owner is that it is best to just do home improvements because they need to be done and will add value to your home, not because you will get a tax deduction. However, there may be some very nice deductions you can take as an added bonus.

Spelling it Out

Getting a tax deduction for home improvements is a great deal. Home improvements will raise the value of your home so you are already getting paid to do them and with the added tax deduction, you are getting even more money in your pocket. Home deductions are not very easy, though. There are many reasons you can and can not take such deductions.

One reason for a deduction is medical reasons. If you must make changes to your home for a medical reason, such as widening doors for handicap access or installing an air conditioning for someone with breathing issues, then you may be able to take a deduction. This falls under the general deduction available for medical expenses. When you spend out over 7 percent of your income on medical expenses you get a tax deduction and that includes money spent on home improvement done for medical reasons. You may also get a deduction is you have to do remodeling for business needs. If you run a business out of your home then certain projects may qualify under business tax deductions. If you need to build an office or add a restroom for business needs, then this may qualify as a business expense That you can take as a deduction. In some cases you can also get a deduction for converting your home over to solar power. This is part of a move to try to reduce dependence on our current energy sources in favor of new, cleaner energy sources.

The bottom line is that there are an array of deductions you can take for home improvements, but they are not necessarily clearly spelled out. The IRS does not list them as actual home improvement deductions. Your home improvements should be made because they are needed or wanted and with the main goal of increasing the value of your home, not getting a tax deduction. You may end up finding out, once the work is done, that there are no deductions for which you qualify.

Aesthetic Gardening for Edible Landscapes

Posted by Sarah Duke
by Sarah Duke

More and more people are moving away from the idea of simple lawns and towards making their outdoor space into more natural landscapes including useful, even edible plants! A lot of edible plants happen to be quite aesthetically pleasing; some vegetables and herbs also have ornamental varieties. It’s great to have your own vegetables - fuel costs are driving up the price of all food products, and produce is no exception.

If you’re interested in creating edible landscapes yourself, you’ll likely want to opt for perennials, since they will return year after year, saving you a lot of work each spring. After planting them once, these plants will give you food and something pleasing to look at for years to come.

Generally, just some water and fertilizer is all they require, plus some trimming, weeding, and pest control. There is an abundance of vegetable types that will continue to feed you for years to come. Perennial vegetables will die in the late fall, but in the springtime they’ll come back and undergo a new growth cycle.

You might think that you’re not up to the task of caring for a traditional vegetable garden, because they involve so much labor. Constant weeding, raking, hoeing, watering, fertilizing, and spraying are all associated with the conventional vegetable patch. But edible landscapes require little more exertion than caring for a flower garden!

Regular landscaping can be replaced with many varieties of edible plants. For example, plant fruit trees rather than non-fruit bearing varieties. To replace ground covers and shrubs many perennial herbs are possibilities. Also, ornamental vegetables can be an option instead of flowers and borders.

Beautiful mixes of edible and non-edible plants are also possible. Herbs are great edible plants to add to traditional flower garden beds. To achieve a different look, you can combine different kinds of plants together.

The use of curly parsley enhances a variety of plants. It looks beautiful when planted in combination with other edibles, like strawberries, or flowers such as pansies and lobelia. Low shrubbery, such as sage and oregano, will add a practical beauty to your landscaping. They compliment your landscape greatly when used as edging in front of larger bushes.

Leaf lettuce looks pretty as an accent. Plant a section of varying types and colors of lettuce, and then add a border of ornamental grass.

Plants with edible flowers come in many varieties. A lot of these plants may have more than one edible part. They can be very attractive pieces of a garden while in bloom. Sugar snap peas produce white, pink and purple flowers, plus they make really good peas.

Fava beans grow white and red flowers. The purple globe-shaped flowers produced by chives make them stand out from other herbs. The blossoms on the dill plant are a delightful shade of yellow. Savory nasturtium flowers come in a wide array of bright colors. The herb sage produces purple and blue flower blossoms. You can also find blue and purple blooms in salvia.

Perennial vegetables and herbs are great to plant in edible gardens, since they dont call for much maintenance. Perennial broccoli, dandelions, sweet potatoes, rhubarb, sorrel, artichokes and Jerusalem artichokes, chives, fennel, garlic chives, ginger, and asparagus are excellent examples.

Lasting Furniture: How to Select Furniture

Posted by Patricia Woods
by Patricia Woods

Picking out furniture is one of the most difficult and weighty decisions one has to make occasionally. True, it quite possibly isn’t that life-altering a choice, but yet it is very important to carefully select a great item that will be timeless, looks good, and functional. Likewise, if you want to choose items that will still be great looking even if you decide to renovate your house sometime in the future.

Initially, you have to consider the dimensions of the room where the fixtures will be. You also need to consider what changes you might want to do in the future. It is important to select items that will not be too small or too big for the room, whether at present or perhaps later. Buying furniture that is simple to shift around is a good thing to do particularly if you propose to renovate the room later on. However, you have to base your options on your budget since you are buying something that’s rather a long lasting component of your house.

Next you need to pick a product that is constructed of strong materials and that is framed sturdily. It’s better to purchase fixtures that aren’t difficult to care for. Items that require so much energy in upkeep might not last to look good enough by the time you redesign your house. If the fixture is made of wood, it needs to be solid and well finished. If it is made of metal, it needs to be treated to prevent rust and shaped well. Plastic might not be the choice as they are easy to get blemished sooner or later.

You might want to get items whose form can very easily be reconditioned. Couches that are simple to upholster again can withstand a lifetime and lots of renovations. There are some tables whose tops can be replaced very easy. The flexibility of such pieces can also assist you in making your room dynamic, as it can be altered at any time, making it appear that you always have new items.

You can also go trendy, by choosing items that’s manufactured to look old. Such item can even look better as it gets older. Such furniture can also look good against contemporary products or even newly remodeled homes, making your house or room trendy and fun.

Choosing fixtures that is long-lasting might be hard, but the energy exerted is generally worth it.

Plaster picture frames can be a nightmare to move and so if you want it to stay in tact you will need to wrap it properly. Using plywood and bubble wrap can really help and it is not overly expensive either. When it comes to moving house one thing which many homeowners do not consider is how to move their pictures. Now with ordinary run of the mill pictures they are simply just wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in a box. However what if the picture is actually a little more valuable than that?

Well some homeowners choose to have their pictures insured, wrapped in bubble wrap a number of times and even meters are hired to ensure that any severe bumps are avoided. Now really this is a little extreme, especially for pictures which may be valuable but not that valuable. So what do you do if you want to protect your pictures but you do not want to pay a lot of money to do so?

How to Pack Your Favorite Pictures perfectly

When it comes to packing your favourite pictures there are a number of things which you will need to keep in mind. The first is can the frame be damaged if there are a lot of bumps on the way to your new home? The second is can the paint on the picture flake because of bumping on the road and finally can the picture end up ruined by the glass smashing on the journey?

It is often the frame that can be quite valuable on a picture and so you really do need to take care of it as well as the actual picture itself. If you have a wooden frame then you can easily protect it using newspaper or any other padded paper. However if your picture has a plaster frame then it could be a little more tricky.

Usually the only safe way to pack a plaster type frame is by measuring it and cutting some plywood to fit. You simply stick the plywood onto the frame, ensuring that you measure the plywood a little longer and wider than the frame itself. This will really help to protect the frame and stop it from chipping or breaking. They will absorb the shock from any bumps which the picture may have, but you do have to ensure that the picture cannot move when the boards are on top of it, otherwise damage could still be done.

Once the wood is carefully on there, it is then a good idea to place bubble wrap around it. This will further protect it and keep the frame safe. Also another thing to keep in mind is that placing bubble wrap under the picture before the plywood is placed on top, as well as padded paper, will help to protect the picture further as otherwise the wood could break the plaster.

Overall pictures do need to be looked after and packed well to avoid any potential disasters, especially if it is a plaster frame. So whilst you do not have to go overboard and take out insurance, it would be a good idea to properly protect the picture ready for its journey to your new home.

Do You Know What Retractable Awnings Are?

Posted by Adam Peters
by Adam Peters

Retractable awnings make an excellent addition to any motor home. You can even purchase them already preassembled onto motor homes too.

When it comes to keeping yourself covered in the summer, retractable awnings are an extremely useful thing to have on the patio. Allowing you to shade yourself from the sun at times of high UV levels, retractable awnings are ideal for any home and they come in a variety of styles too.

The Different Types of Retractable Awnings

Generally there are two main types of retractable awnings and those are manual and automatic awnings. No matter which type you use you will have to assemble each one manually though it is not overly difficult.

With manual retractable awnings you retract them by using a hand wheel which is fixed to a gear mechanism. With motorized retractable awnings you operate them through an electric motor.

Where Retractable Awnings Are Used

Many people like to have retractable awnings on motor homes and they are usually fixed to one side of the home. You can purchase retractable awnings either open or enclosed and generally the enclosed option tends to have either a plastic or fabric cover on the sides and at the front. This ensures that you get your privacy and you will also notice that the awnings have electrical wiring which is extended from the motor home which will allow you to have adequate lighting in the evening.

Many people across America love living in their motor homes and they travel around frequently, staying at various motor home parks. Most parks allow you to erect awnings but it is a good idea to check with the owners of the park first. Another thing to consider is that staying at a park which does allow awnings to be constructed is usually quite expensive.

When looking at motor home retractable awnings you will find that they are custom made to suit the length of your motor home. All motor homes are different and so it is always a good idea to have awnings specially made to suit your motor home. You can even purchase motor homes which come with awnings already pre attached and that saves an awful lot of hassle.

Overall retractable awnings are an ideal accessory for any motor home. So if you have not got one yet it might be worth thinking about!
