Log Splitters for Wood Burner Needs

Posted by Ray Walberg
by Ray Walberg

For those who need to cut a lot of wood for the winter or such, you may want to consider getting a log splitter. A log splitter will allow you to cut your fire wood or your furniture wood very quickly. You will be able to purchase one where other logging equipment is sold and you will be able to save a lot of time and money when you use a log splitter that you is used or that you made yourself. Log splitter plans are located throughout the World Wide Web and you will be able to make yourself one with the plans.

With a hydraulic log splitter you will find that it will run on gas or possibly diesel. The engine is attached to something called an oil pump and that is what will power the hydraulic cylinder. This is why the log cutter will split the wood quickly. However, you have to be concerned with the fact that the tank holds the oil and must be changed every now and then.

There are a lot of exciting features of the hydraulic splitter like the engine’s power ranges from 5 to 8 horsepower. If you are using it for your home, you really only need a small engine, because the others are made for commercial use. For those who get a log splitter with a two stage oil pump, you will be able to cut your time down from days to hours. Cutting firewood comes in steps, but this way you can take some of the steps out and combine them to save a lot of time. They also have 10-25 tons of splitting force ready to use. They are very powerful and you need to be very careful when operating a log splitter.

As for some safety tips, most of them are common sense. You should never have your children operate the equipment. You need to make sure that the kids are no where near the equipment because they could still get hurt from the flying debris. You need to also wear good foot wear like steel-toed boots. It is recommended that you do not use loose clothing or even long sleeves, because they can get caught in the long splitter. Safety goggles are a must. Also, before you even use the splitter, you will need to be comfortable with the machine by reading all the instructions completely. You also should never make any adjustments to the settings while using the machine. It’s suggested that you use the machine only during the day so that you can alert of where you are and what you are doing. Finally, keep in mind that this is a machine for only wood and nothing else. It’s important that you use some common sense and always have the guards on the machine and never take them off.

Great Kitchen Counter Top Renovation Ideas

Posted by John Bakers
by John Bakers

The easiest way to make your kitchen look as good as new is to paint it, however if that’s not good enough then there is another alternative. Another simple way of breathing extra life into your kitchen is to renovate your kitchen counter tops. You could replace the surface on your existing counter top, or replace it with a brand new one. This will completely transform the look of your kitchen and make it look much newer. You’ll be amazed just how much a kitchen counter top can lighten up the whole room. These work surfaces are also very important food preparation areas, so as well as looking nice they will also be functional.

Lots of older kitchen counters are constructed fairly cheaply out of plywood with an attractive layer stuck to the top. If you remove this top layer, you can replace it. Sounds easy? Well unfortunately getting the top layer off is extremely difficult! If you do manage to strip the old later off then you can replace it with something new at a very low cost. The easiest (but more expensive) option is to rip out your old work surfaces and replace them with brand new ones, such as marble or countertops made of granite. You can buy kitchen surfaces in many different designs, so you can be sure they will compliment your kitchen perfectly.

You can normally replace the counter tops in your kitchen without any specialist knowledge. Even if you’re not that good at DIY you shouldn’t have any huge problems. You should draw a picture of how the new top will look when it is installed. Also draw a picture of the existing counter top and mark out any measurements, you don’t want to get a counter that’s too big!

It can Take two

When you’ve decided on your new counter top you need to strip the old one out. First you should remove everything from the cabinets and drawers otherwise everything will get very messy. Look for the screws and bolts which hold the counter top in place. Remove these screws and get your friend to help you lift the counter top away.

When you’ve removed the old one you need to start preparing the surface of the cabinets. You must clean down all of the tops of the cabinets to make sure that they are perfectly level. Lay the counter top where it is going to go, and fix it with the screws that came with your counter top. It’s not really a very complicated task, the most difficult bit is actually preparing the surfaces.

The History of the Microwave

Posted by Amy Nutt
by Amy Nutt

In 1946, Dr. Percy Spencer was quite intrigued when he was testing the magnetron, a new vacuum tube, when all of a sudden the candy bar in his pocket melted. This amazed him so much that he thought he would try another experiment with popcorn kernels. He placed the kernels in front of the magnetron and to his surprise they started popping.

It was the next day that Spencer decided to put an egg next to the magnetron. When he did so, the egg began trembling because of the pressure inside of the egg due to the rapidly rising temperature. When a colleague of Spencer’s decided to get a better look at the shaking egg, the egg exploded and he was showered with its contents. This brought Spencer to the conclusion that low-density microwave energy was causing these foods to cook quickly. This is when his experimentation took him to entirely new levels.

That is when Spencer took a metal box and cut out an opening that he could feed the microwave energy through. Once the energy was in the box it was unable to escape, so this created a high-density electromagnetic field. This caused the temperature of any food put inside the box to rise quite rapidly. What this did was revolutionize the way that food is cooked and was the basis for what would become the microwave oven.

The first

However, the microwave oven did not look quite like what we use today. In fact, it weighed approximately 750 pounds and was almost 6 feet in height. This was in late 1946 when the patent was filed by the Raytheon Company. A Boston restaurant was put in charge of testing this large microwave and it was in 1947 that the commercial version of the microwave made its debut on the market, but they cost around $5,000 a piece. Why so expensive? Well, plumbing units also had to be installed because the magnetron had to be cooled by water.

Not everyone looked upon this new invention in a favorable way. It was a complicated unit, but improvements would change the view of the public toward the microwave oven. Smaller units were made and the magnetron was able to be cooled by air, so the need for the plumber was eradicated.

Eventually, microwave ovens were used for more than cooking food. Many commercial establishments were using them to dry cork, paper, and even leather. Then in 1947, the Radarange was introduced by Raytheon. The price was now between $2,000 and $3,000 and the cabinets that housed the microwave were around the size of a refrigerator. Between 1952 and 1955, the first home united, priced at $1295, was introduced by Tappan. It was in 1965 that Raytheon acquired Amana and 1967 when they introduced the first countertop models.

Progression

By 1975, the microwave had made great strides and had even exceeded gas range sales. It became the staple of any kitchen. By 1976, the microwave had more owners than the dishwasher. No longer was the microwave considered a luxury, it was considered a necessity.

Now, we see that microwaves come in many shapes, sizes, colors, and it is difficult to find someone that doesn’t have a microwave oven. And as time goes on, the microwave still continues to change face. With the many different settings that ranges from power defrost to popping popcorn at the push of a single button, it is no wonder that most of our meals are cooked within the microwave. It is quick, it is easy, and it also saves a considerable amount of energy.

Professional vs. DIY Duct Cleaning

Posted by Amy Nutt
by Amy Nutt

Air ducts are used in the home for distributing the air heated by furnaces or cooled by air conditioners to the entire house. These ducts tend to be made of metal and run along the floor joists which means that you can only see them when you are in the basement. Over time, these ducts collect dust and debris inside of them and as time goes on, the dust gets blown back into the air that you are breathing and living in. Just like chimneys, air ducts need a good cleaning every once in a while.

Cleaning your ducts will give you cleaner air which means better indoor air quality and it helps to get rid of molds, dust and allergens that tend to build up. Cleaner air helps to keep people from developing allergies to dust and pollen and it also helps to make it easier for asthmatics to breathe. Another advantage to cleaning your ducts is that it keeps the dust down in the house so that you don’t need to dust nearly as often. Duct cleaning on a regular basis will also reduce energy costs and result in more airflow in the furnace system which means that you will get a better delivery of warm air. So now that we have determined why you need to clean your ducts, the only question is do you dare to clean them yourself or do you want to take the easy way out and get the professionals to do it for you?

There is one main advantage of cleaning your air ducts yourself which is that you save a whole lot of money that you would have spent on hiring a professional. If you do decide to clean them yourself, you want to make sure that you vacuum the vents as far as you can reach inside of them. Wipe the vent walls with a damp cloth and try and get as much dust and debris out of them as possible. Once you’re done vacuuming and cleaning, make sure that you put the vents back on properly and secure them tightly so that nothing falls down them. Cleaning them yourself is much cheaper but there are some disadvantages as well.

As much fun as it is to get dirty and use your vacuum to clean your vents, they will never be as clean as if you were to get a professional to do them. Professionals have all the right equipment including longer hoses and disinfectants that they ensure goes through the entire duct system to eliminate mold, bacteria and dust mites. Another advantage to having a professional clean your vents is that they are able to do it quickly and easily and will be out of your house in no time.

So if you are able to financially, the best thing to do is to get your ducts cleaned professionally once a year at the beginning of the heating season and then do it yourself as maintenance ever two or three months until the next year when you get them in to clean them again. This way, you are able to rest easy knowing that it is done properly at least once in awhile and still be able to save money doing it yourself the rest of the times.

Saturday Tools for the Weekend Gardener

Posted by Thomas Fryd
by Thomas Fryd

All gardens are not the same, therefore the types of garden tools for each garden differ. Some garden shops carry tools for all kinds of gardens, while others specialize in tools for a specific type of garden. Some other garden tool stores have alternative tools such as organic fertilizers, natural pest controls, and ergonomic garden tools. The alternative stores usually have the best products. You must know what kind of garden you have to be able to find the correct tools that will make your work much easier.

The following information includes descriptions of some common tools and the jobs that they help to complete.

Secateurs are used for basic pruning, and typically cost from $50 - $130. You should find a model whose blades can be either replaced or sharpened, because dull blades can damage your plants. The one you purchase should also have tension control, and you should check to make sure that it’s comfortable in your hands.

To prune hedges and shrubs, hedge trimmers are probably the best option. Some of them are available with curved blades so branches won’t slide out when they are cut.

To turn and aerate compost and soil, forks are used. Forks have been around for a very long time, and are very helpful. The older designs work very well. Simplicity and sturdiness is good for forks. They typically cost from $30 - $100.

You may be confused about the difference between a shovel and a spade. A shovel has a scoop blade and is used to move around dirt and soil in the garden. A spade, on the other hand, has a flat blade that is used for cutting edges, and digging and dividing plants. Spades should be kept very sharp. You should expect to pay $30 - $50 for a spade. A shovel or spade is pretty much a necessity for any type of garden.

If you have plants such as roses, a pruning saw can come in handy but may not be needed with common indoor houseplants. They have a blade that can fit between stems or branches, and it easily cuts through them. They cost $27-$55.

You don’t have to spend too much money to get great gardening tools. It is helpful to check flea markets and garage sales for high quality tools at good prices. No matter what, you will need some tools to care for your garden.

Replacing Doors Can Be Do-It-Yourself Project

Posted by Jack Blacksmith
by Jack Blacksmith

Door replacement is a task that any homeowner can complete, with basic skills, a few tools and patience. In fact, this can be a wonderful opportunity for the do-it-yourself person to learn a new task and save a bit of money that might otherwise be paid to a professional. The choice of a the correct door design and finish can change the look of a room, attract the visitor to the outside of the home, and also help keep the home airtight.

For basic understanding of this task, there are three types of doors: combination doors (screen/storm); entry doors; and interior doors. Five simple steps can lead the individual through the task of replacing an entry door. As most experienced homeowners know, mastering entry door replacement gives the individual the knowledge to replace interior doors (a simpler version of the entry-door technique).

Replacing a combination door follows the same steps as that for entry doors, but the process can be a bit more complex. Manufacturers generally provide good instructions and suggestions for installing combination storm/screen doors. Following these instructions carefully will usually lead to completion of the project with success (and reduced stress). Professionals at the home improvement center or hardware store can also be an excellent source for tips and suggestions.

But where should the do-it-yourself homeowner begin with installing doors? Here are five basic steps for the process, starting with:

Remove The Old Door

Careful removal of the old door is an important first step. After opening the door, place a wedge under the outer corner to take the weight off the door hinges. Remove the hinge pins and set the door aside. This door can be used as a pattern for trimming the new door if it has not been seriously damaged or if it isn’t too badly warped.

Remove Hinge Leaves

The next step is to remove the hinge pieces from the frame. Depending on the desire to use existing hardware, these hinges can be reused or new ones can be substituted. Older hinges can be lightly buffed with fine sandpaper to restore some of the original appearance. Be sure the screws for the new hinges are long enough to reach into the stud behind the door frame.

Trim New Door

It would be wise to use the old door as a pattern for the new one. The alternative is to measure the door opening and allow a 1/8″ bottom clearance as well as a 1/16″ top and side clearance. The bottom clearance for a carpeted floor will probably have to be 3/4″. Trim and plane door as necessary, using a fine-tooth saw and good plane.

Prepare New Door For Hinges

New areas must be carved out so the hinge blades can fit smoothly into the frame and door. Using the old door can help with proper location of hinges. A pencil outline of the hinge is essential for cutting this depression in the wood. Carefully chisel out the wood with a scroll saw , with several cuts to the depth of the hinge leaf.

Hang New Door

It is time to put the hinges on, securing them with strong screws. When hanging the door, insert hinge pins by starting with top hinge. With patience and attention to detail, this project can be finished quickly enough to allow time for a bit of relaxation!

Questions to ask a junk removal company

1. “What do you hail away?” Ask this because a good company will haul anything you need to get rid of.

2. “How much do you charge to haul it?” A good junk removal company will provide you with a price that you may find quite reasonable.

3. “How do you dispose of the junk?” You want to make sure they are disposing of it at a dump and not an illegal dump at the side of a road somewhere.

4. “Are you licensed?” Some states require licensing for junk removal, so make sure they have a license.

5. “How much experience do you have?” You want to ensure that they have the adequate experience.

By asking these questions, you can make sure that your junk goes where it belongs and that it gets there by an experienced crew that can do it for you at a reasonable rate. There is no need to stare at junk all day when there is a way to get rid of it.
