This article deals with the varioous kinds of valances available. It brings out the differences between the three valances namely, balloon, swag and pleated valances. It also brings out the method to go about making these valances.

If you happen to be that kind of person who likes to keep the window open and look outside according to your wish without any hindrance, then you would certainly have to go for the valance. Valances are available in a market or any department store from among a wide range to choose from. These valances can be combined with other window dressing accessories like shutters, blinds, drapes and curtains. In case you want to keep your window open all day and night then you could opt for a valance that would suit your purpose.

When plunging upon the choice for your interior project, you could generally choose between formal and casual valances. For that less informal look you could opt for free flowing variety or go for the stiff and shaped to form a perfect fit as part of your window treatment. You can also choose from amongst airy light cotton type material or the tapestry type fabric.

Balloon valance - as the name suggests, the shape of the balloon comes from the way the fabric is folded, pinched and bundled to make each section balloon out. Normally the top part of the valance is ruffled a bit. Old newspaper or tissue is usually stuffed in places where it will not show to give the valance that fluffed look for fabrics those which are thicker for the valance. Balloon valance is normally folded into sections and hung on a rod. When using balloon valance it is suggested that lighter weight cotton material with something solid or with stripes and patterns be used for a different look.

Swag Valance - this kind of valance is normally used for fabrics of lightweight but, they are reasonably effective on heavier fabrics also. This valance is created in which the fabric is let out on the floor and gathered to a small pile. The fabric can also be gathered to be put on the either side of the window or draped back to form decorative patterns. This valance would have to be supported in the centre to prevent the structure along with the fabric from collapsing. A sensibly camouflaged pin or bracket could be used to maintain discretion. Here you will get to know more about bamboo outdoor window shades.

Pleated Valance - This is a job usually best done by a professional seamstress or an interior decorator rather than doing it yourself at home. These valances are made up from heavier variety of fabric. It is important to have equal distance between one pleated fold to another to divide the sections for folding. A two by four board with an L bracket to create a type of shelf at the top of the window is used for the pleated valance to be hung. Lastly, the boards have to be hung and the fabric has to be stapled.

The emphasis while choosing the window treatment is to enhance the look of the room by adding distinction. Window valances can be created practically by anyone with a little bit of imagination and skill.
