Home Improvements That Make Us Laugh

Posted by Ray Walberg

How Hollywood views kitchen renovation projects is quite hilarious. Generally the way that kitchen remodeling projects are portrayed in the movies and on television are as comedies. The reasons are obvious. Everything you need for a good comedy is present-power tools with points, demolition and the possibility of accidents and the chance that someone is going to fall off of a ladder. While do it yourself kitchen remodels may cause one to put a lot of things into perspective, Hollywood is not going to make a serious remodeling movie unless it is a parody.

During the 1930’s and 40’s Americans were in desperate need of comedy. With the Depression that occurred after the stock market crashed and World War II, everyone was looking for a way to escape reality. The best way to do that was to go to the movies. Comedy teams like the Three Stooges and Laurel and Hardy would begin repair jobs somewhere in the house and make a complete mess of everything they came across. For a small price Americans would pile into movie theaters and find relief from the turmoil that surrounded them. These movies mocked the renovating exploits of the comedy teams but the instances were funny because they could occur in real life.

Home Improvement is one of the most popular television shows in recent history. This was a comedy show that was based on Tim Allen’s stand up comedy routine. Allen was the star of the show and the premise of the show was that the star was on a television show that helped people learn how to complete home improvements. Of course, the projects never were completed without trouble. The character’s relationships with his family and neighbor go much smoother than his home improvement projects. Viewers enjoyed the character and found themselves connected with him the way that viewers of the past connected with The Three Stooges and Laurel and Hardy.

During the summer of 1987 we had some work done on our house. It became the Summer of Construction Workers. Our kitchen remodel was botched and had to been redone a couple of times. Once the workers were gone we celebrated the finished project by watching a movie that we relate to, The Money Pit. Tom Hanks gave a great acting job in this funny and very realistic movie. The Money Pit is about a couple that finds the house of there dreams. As soon as they buy it the house begins to fall apart. Things get worse and worse as the movie goes along. Everyone else in my family thought it was a hoot by I was traumatized by it. It came a little bit too close to home for me.

Mobile Storage containers while not a new idea for self storage have still proven a valuable option to those who do not think traditional self storage will work for them. No packing the car, packing the storage unit, packing the car, unpacking the car to get you items back to your home or office.

Our Door to Door Storage containers may stay at your home or office for up to a month allowing you to take your time packing and securing your items. That is the greatest perk about this kind of moving system for you and for your family. You get to control access to the unit and you get to lock it up as well.

Door-to-Door Storage and Moving can be a great alternative for those businesses needing document storage. The large breathable containers can hold about 60 file boxes and like their other services, can drop off containers to your business for loading. Pods can be placed at your business for up to a month.

Companies sell the basic moving and packing supplies and even offers package deals to accommodate households of all sizes. Accessories include; tape, labels, tape guns, markers, mattress bags, locks and more. Protective packing materials include; bubble wrap, newsprint, dish kits, stretch wrap, blankets and more. All sizes and types of boxes needed for packing and moving are available. Boxes can be purchased individually or by the bunch.

Because people need to store their sofas, beds, washer and dryers and everything else that comes in a house, it’s important to be able to get these items arranged and stored properly. Door to Door Storage and Moving uses common carriers to move your containers long distance.

The travel alone can be expensive and many families do not want to pack the whole gang in a moving truck and haul it across the country. Hotel stays, eating on the road and time off from work are just a few items Door to Door Storage and Moving can save you.

Is Your Home Just Good Or Great

Posted by Jerry Blackburn
by Jerry Blackburn

When you are in your kitchen there are always many ways to show it and yourself that you care. One great example to show your kitchen some love is by doing right by it and cooking inside of it a really great meal for your in-law’s so that they will finally look at you as not just some bum who married into their family but as a serious and prolific chef; even if you are not one at all. But there is only one way to achieve this kind of Zen and it is not by ignoring your temple but by adorning it with all the tools of the trade.

You need to be sure that your kitchen is loved if you are trying to get love back from it. While this may seem to be as logical a conclusion as any, you would be surprised at how many come back clueless from this interrogation and the results are, not surprisingly, not ever very pretty. By this rationale your kitchen needs to be not only paid better attention to but thought well of, revered, regarded, even loved.

Is Your Home Just Good Or Great

Again as a point of reference you need to be aware of your standing in the world as it relates back to every room in your house but particularly for your kitchen. Do you show this room any love or not? Are there black plastic forks and knives all over the place and Kentucky Fried Chicken buckets or do you have some class? If this is a question that you even need to think about at all, then you need to think a little bit more about your kitchen. Have you taken time to really look at new designs for cupboards or kitchen islands, or are you still eating on paper plates?

While we’re not looking to put a judgment call on you, the business of the business is clear enough. You need to be able to find your way in this haze of a life and taking your kitchen from just okay to great or better is the way to do it. In order to improve your quality of life you need to begin with the rooms in your home.

It’s The Lovely

Once you have made quick work of all the trash and glam from your former life then you need to be able to trust your instincts. Where some things should go may not at first be clear to you; you may need to move things around, you may even need to tear down whole walls to get what you are looking for. But once you find it, you won’t have any more questions about what you thought you didn’t know. Making your way in the kitchen today takes a little bit of understanding, trial and error, and some luck on your part.

For homeowners who do not want to remodel their homes by themselves, there are renovation companies that provide the professional results without the hassle. When you are ready to remodel, you may want to make a deal with a company that specializes in the work you need. Though some companies have all the resources in the world give the consumer every kind of home remodeling option, smaller contractors might only be able to offer a small range of services.

Before you start contacting companies by simply searching through your local yellow pages, take the time to think about what you need and get some information about companies in your area. The kind of work you need should determine the remodeling company you contact. You wouldn’t want to get a company specializing in floors when you need to get a texture added to drywall. Also, if you try contacting a home renovation company that offers to do all the work, the final price tag may be slightly higher than that of a niche business.

If a home renovation company only does one kind of job, they may have plenty of parts and fixtures left over from other clients, which could save you money. If a large renovation outfit needs to line up a smaller company to work on your home, they will charge fee just to make the call.

The largest gripe that home renovation companies have with their clients is that it is not always clear who makes the important decisions about the project. If couples start to bicker about which way to go, the contractor frequently gets caught in the middle. Usually, all parties are on the same page in the beginning, but if ideas change mid-way through and disagreements begin, those working on the project need to know who is ultimately in charge.

Usually, it is best to work out the details with the contractor before beginning the project. Then, the client would do well to sit back and let the workers complete their job so the project gets finished by the target date and without going over-budget. A lot home renovation companies would rather work this way, instead of the homeowner contracting four different companies for every stage of the remodel. With one company in charge, it is far easier to get the timing right and finish the project according to the homeowner’s original vision.

If you are planning a project in the near future, remember that more is not always merrier when it comes to home renovations. Be sure the decision-making arrangements are in place prior to the project and maintained throughout. This will ensure a smoother process for all parties involved!

The popularity of using outdoor lighting to show off one’s home or landscape at night is growing. Besides the benefit of looking nice, the lights also serve the purpose of increasing safety. Lights will help you avoid tripping, while also deterring dangerous individuals from coming around your home. You can read some myths and truths about outdoor lighting here:

Myth: If you don’t have expertise with electricity, low voltage lights can be dangerous to install.

Truth: Low voltage lights are extremely safe. Most of these systems run on only 12 volts, so you do not need to be an electricity expert. The 12 volts of power is harmless even if you were to touch an exposed wire. No matter what your experience level, you should be able to install a low voltage system in an hour or less.

Myth: It takes hundreds of dollars to have outdoor lighting.

Truth: A basic Malibu low voltage lighting system can be purchased for under $50. The lights look great, and have exceptional quality and durability. The lights will last for years, and you can add lights over time as your are ready to expand. If you want a full lighting system right away, it is possible to light your pathways, garden, deck, and patio for about $150. The safety and style that the lights will add is well worth it.

Myth: Solar powered lights require constant sunlight to work properly.

Truth: At night, the lights will be able to stay on for as long as the sensors were in sunlight during the day. If you need lights to stay on longer than that, solar power may not be the best option. It works well for many situations though, as long as you can provide the sensors with adequate sunlight.

Myth: It’s best to use either low voltage or solar lights, but not both.

Truth: It is fine to mix one kind of light with another. Some areas need brighter lights, where the low voltage lights would excel, whereas areas that do not need as much lighting power would work great with solar powered lights.

Myth: It takes hours of hard work or it is necessary to hire a professional to install an outdoor lighting system.

Truth: Installing solar powered LED landscape lighting is one of the simplest landscaping jobs that there is. Six to Eight lights can be installed in under an hour. You do not have to worry about dangers with low voltage lights. The only tool you will need is s screwdriver.

Myth: There are only simple, boring styles of low voltage and solar powered lights available.

Truth: There are dozens of interesting Malibu fixture styles available in different finishes, designs, and colors.

Myth: Solar powered lights still don’t work well, even after recent advancements.

Truth: Malibu solar accent lights are extremely effective. They have solar collection panels that absorb energy from the sun during the day and convert it into electricity to be used at night. They work well, are easy to install, and save you money on your electricity bill.

Myth: Your energy bill will rise significantly when you use low voltage lights.

Truth: A low voltage lighting system is not using a typical 120 volt current. It is only using 12 volts, so the power usage is low. Mixing low voltage lights and solar lights will definitely lower your energy bill.
